Lawn Sprinkler Games

Playing in the sprinklers is a summer tradition all throughout the United States. Children with no pool access especially love playing in sprinklers. Adults usually do not mind running the water while children player in the sprinkler because they water the grass anyway. To make playing in the sprinklers even more fun, introduce these games to the children. Children should be prepared to get wet and wear bathing suits for all of these games.
  1. Sprinkler Rover

    • This is a game for a group of kids. Line the children up in two lines. Place a sprinkler between the two lines of children and turn it on. The game plays like regular Red Rover. One team chants, “Red Rover, Red Rover, let (child’s name) come over!” That child must then race through the sprinkler and try to break through the line of hands on the other side. If he succeeds, then he gets to go back to his team. If not, he must join the team that called him over.

    Water Limbo

    • This game is best played with a sprinkler hose or a spray nozzle on a hose. Children should take turns holding the sprinkler up for the other children. One at a time, the children try to crawl or walk under the spray of water without getting wet. If a child gets wet, then she is out for the round. After every child has had a chance to go under the spray, then the spray is lowered slightly. All children who successfully passed through the first time get a chance to try again with the lower spray. Play continues until no children remain who can walk under the sprinkler line.

    Sprinkler Snake

    • This game requires a flat sprinkler. Spread the sprinkler across a flat piece of lawn. The object of the game is to run across the sprinkler while the sprinkler is off. One child, or a parent, mans the water faucet. She should randomly turn the sprinkler on an off. Whenever a child is caught in the spray of water, he is out until the next round. The last dry child is the winner of the game.

    Sprinkler Freeze

    • This is a game for a group of children to play. Place a sprinkler in the yard. Rotating sprinkler heads, where the sprinkler does not spray in the same area the entire time, make this game even more fun. Turn the sprinkler on. Play progresses like regular freeze tag. When a player is tagged, she must freeze until he is unfrozen. If the child moves while frozen, then she is out of the game. The challenge of this version of the game is for the player to remain still while the sprinklers are spraying her. The last unfrozen player wins. The player who is “it” can also win by freezing all other players.
