Anagrams
Anagrams is a fun word game for kids. Just think of a word—a short one for younger kids, or a longer one for older kids—and challenge players to come up with as many words as they can that use letters in the word. For example, if you use the word "wrist," kids might come up with "stir," "sit," "sir," and "wit." Using long words like "archeology" is a good way to teach vocabulary.
Make a Sentence
You can play the Make a Sentence game with store-bought letter cards or you can make your own letter cards using markers and index cards. Mix up the letters, and have a child choose between three and 10 cards and lay them out in a row. Challenge kids to come up with a sentence that uses each of the letters in order as the first letter in a word. For example, if the child chooses M, G, L, C, E, W, and F, the sentence might be "My grandma loves chocolate eclairs with frosting."
G-H-O-S-T
This game is perfect for long car rides or long waits for an activity to start. To play, each player takes a turn adding a letter to a word, but trying not to finish the word. For example, the first player might start with a "P," the second player might add an "L," and the third player might add an "A." The fourth player would not want to add an "N" or a "Y" (which would complete the word) but might add a "C" instead. If a player is forced to finish a word, that player receives a letter of the word "ghost." Once a player has received all five letters of the word "ghost," she is out of the game. Play continues until only one player remains.
