Outdoor Carnival Games

Outdoor carnival games are a fixture at a fundraising carnival or a fall festival. The games are easy to set up and work best outside because of the water and the mess that the games can cause. Participants should be able to earn some type of prize by playing. One option is to offer a small prize for trying and a larger prize for those who win the game.
  1. Pie Throwing Contest

    • This game requires cream pies on paper plates or in paper pie tins. Have someone sit on a chair about 10 feet away. People throw the pies at the face of the person, trying to get a direct hit. The area around the person should be lined in plastic for easy clean up. You can also put a plastic poncho or garbage bag over the person’s clothes so that he can enjoy the carnival after his shift is over.

    Dunking Booth

    • Rent a dunking booth or set up a drenching booth where people throw footballs at a bucket in an attempt to drench the person sitting underneath the bucket. The bucket should be tied firmly to a tree, and the balls should be soft enough that if they bounce off and hit the person they will not hurt him. The fuller the bucket of water, the easier it will be to slosh the water out.

    Obstacle Course

    • An obstacle course that allows people to race against each other can involve climbing over and under things, as well as using skills such as tossing rings onto sticks or balls into hoops. Another option is dressing up or doing silly things as part of the obstacle course.

    Jousting

    • Have participants stand in a wading pool with no shoes on. Then have them joust using pool noodles. Rules should clearly state they are not allowed to strike above the ribs. Participants try to knock each other over. The jousting match should last about one minute. The winner is the one standing at the end.

    Water Duck Races

    • Set up a wading pool with two rubber ducks in the pool. Give each participant a water gun. The participants race to get their ducks to the other side of the pool. Pump guns with more water pressure make the races faster. You can also do a tug-of-war style game with one duck. The participants try to get the duck to their opponent’s side of the pool. The first participant to get the duck all the way across the pool wins.
