Feeling Good About Me
In the same article published by NYC Child Study Center, Dr. Gurian states that girls in grades 5 to 12 are dissatisfied with their bodies, resulting in 10 year olds who diet and 15 year olds who are twice as likely to suffer from depression as their male counterparts. Help reverse these trends by hosting a girls&' game night. Invite moms and their daughters to gather once a week or even once a month for nutritious food, fun, and fellowship.
Play "Feeling Good About Me." Divide the group into two teams and ask questions related to good nutrition, healthy weight management, and exercise. For example: "What is a calorie?" "Which is a better snack choice: a cola and a bag of chips or a sports drink and an apple?" "What is good fat?" Leave time for discussion between questions. Give your daughter and other girls the gift of a powerful support group that will help them through those rocky pre-teen and teenage years.
Queen of Celeb Trivia
Pre-teens and teens love celebrities. They listen to their music, watch them on television, and know every detail about their personal lives. At your daughter&'s next birthday party or sleep over, show the girls you are a "cool Mom." While you are feeding them, ask if anyone knows anything about (name the celebrity or celebrities). When they respond, ask them who knows the most. Of course, as die- hard fans, most of them will claim they know the most. Tell them you have a game that will determine who knows the most. Those who participate will get prizes and the overall winner will be crowned Celebrity Trivia Queen for the day, complete with tiara, banner and poster of the favorite celebrity. This has it&'s own "teachable moment" if you discuss some of the bad choices celebrities make. (Warning: You will probably have even more fun than they do.)
Shop or Drop
Sneak in those math skills and a lesson on comparison shopping with this question game. Ask four girls to make a wish list of items they would like from the mall. From their separate lists, come up with five items they would all like. Then take a trip to the mall and visit the stores. Under your supervision, let them do their own comparison shopping so they can tell you which stores have the best buys on those five items. If both teams can successfully answer this question after shopping, you will treat everyone to a pizza at the end of the day.
