Biblical Views on Real-Life Issues
You can have a trivia game in which the students will have to guess which Bible verses would best apply to certain life situations they face and current social issues. Give each student a list of questions and as a homework assignment have them study the Bible to find verses which best answer those questions. For example, you may have some questions which ask what the Bible has to say about dating. When they return to Sunday school the following week, you will ask the same questions and the students will have to know the answer without looking at the Bible. The winners will get to help you create a new game.
Community Service Game
One way to combine service and fun is by having community service games. For example, if your church is holding a canned food drive in two weeks, you can have a game that requires students to collect a certain amount of canned goods between now and the day of the food drive. If some students collect the required number of canned goods, you could give them prizes such as restaurant gift certificates, some school supplies, or inspirational books.
Essay Contest
One good way to allow teenagers to express their faith through writing is by holding an essay contest for prizes. Have the students choose their own topics but the topics must be religious in nature. Once the students write their essays, the following week each student will give a presentation on his or her topic in front of church members during worship service, and you and two other Sunday school teachers will judge the essays after the service ends. The essays should be judged on originality, organization and clarity. The essay winners will have profiles of them featured in the church bulletin.
Cooking Contest
Another idea is to pair your students in groups of three for a cooking contest in which you will give each group a bag of ingredients for them to make a unique but flavorful meal that will be ready for the churchgoers after the worship service ends. For example, you may give one teenager a bag with chicken strips, green beans, tomatoes and green onions while another teenager may have a bag with linguini, ground turkey, eggs, and celery. The members will judge the meals and the winners will receive a cookbook.
Paint Color Ideas
If your fellowship hall needs a makeover, have the teenagers write down a list of possible paint colors for the walls in this building. Encourage them to think about bold but tasteful colors. Then you can tell them that there will be a contest in which the Sunday school director will review the colors you chose and will pick the winner. The winner will get the opportunity to assist with updating the furniture and accessories for the fellowship hall.
