Olympic Activities for Kids

One means of getting children interested in summer and winter Olympic sports events is to host Olympic activities designed for kids. More importantly, it illustrates the profound message of peace and collaboration in a simple, enjoyable manner. Prepare for the child version of Olympic games by enhancing the scenery. Construct paper medals and flags, utilize stuffed animals as mascots, and divide children into teams. Do not forget the opening ceremony as the kids prepare for the upcoming activities.
  1. Egg and Spoon Relay Race

    • Position three members of each team at set intervals, so that the first runner may pass the egg in the spoon to the second runner, and so forth. Place each egg in a spoon and hand them to the two starting racers. The racer must balance the egg, without using her free hand, and make it from point A to point B, where she then passes it to her teammate, who repeats the process. Runners may pick up an egg if it drops without breaking. The runner who makes it back to point A the fastest wins.

    Discus Throw Competition

    • Tape two paper plates together facing inward if you do not have a Frisbee for each team. Have the children stand back several feet from the starting line so they can run and build momentum to throw. Coach the children to throw away from their waists. Record distances for each player, then record distances collectively for every team. The children and teams with the longest distances win. Remember to color-code the plates, or use different colored Frisbees.

    Suitcase Relay Race

    • The suitcase relay is a dress-up game that requires two teams. Fill two suitcases with a hat, a pair of adult-size shoes and an adult-size suit. Divide each team into two sub-groups, with two members from each group stationed at points A and B. Ensure that both members from each team are facing each other. Hand over the suitcase to the child situated at point A. Have him open the suitcase and put on the clothing at your signal. Make sure the shoes are tied and the jacket is buttoned. The child then runs the short distance to point B and removes the clothes, placing them back in the suitcase. The kids at each point B repeat the procedure. Continue until all team members have dressed and undressed, with the quickest team winning the game.

    Water Balloon Toss

    • Fill several balloons with water and tie them closed. Put as much water as possible inside the balloons to make them easier to break. Position the children in a side-by-side line facing each other if played in pairs, or small circles if played in teams. Give each pair or team one balloon and have them toss it back and forth. If the water balloon breaks, the duo or team is out. Have children sit down or step out of the way until one team or duo remains.
