Outdoor Games That 5-7 Kids Can Play

Get a group of five to seven kids together and there are several outdoor games they can play. The activities might involve running, hiding, teamwork or individual skills. Most can be adapted to ages and abilities, but for the games to be fun you need enough players.
  1. Tag

    • Tag is a game that requires at least three kids, but works best with a few more. One person is labeled “it” while the others try not to get tagged. There are several variations to the game. Freeze tag is played where “it” runs after the other players. When the player tags, or touches one of the other players, the person must freeze, or stay in the spot they were caught. In order to get unfrozen and back in the game, another player must touch the frozen player on the back or shoulders. T.V. tag is played in much the same way, but to get a person back in the game a player must touch them and yell out the name of a television program. The program can only be named once during the game.

    Duck, Duck, Goose

    • Duck, duck, goose is a circle game geared towards younger children. Having five to seven kids play keeps it interesting and fun. Have the children sit in a large circle. One child is “it” and walks around the outside of the circle, gently touching the others on the head and calls each one a duck. The player should randomly call one a goose. The one called "goose" gets up and must chase “it”. If “it” makes it all the way around the circle and sits in the open spot before “goose” tags them, the player is free and “goose” becomes “it”. If “it gets tagged before sitting down, they continue to be “it”.

    Hide and Seek

    • Before playing hide and seek outside, set boundaries, like no hiding in the garage or no going out of the backyard. One child closes their eyes and slowly counts to 30 while the other kids hide. Once the child reaches 30, they open their eyes and yell “Ready or not, here I come”, and looks for the other players. When the player finds someone, they yell the name and location, like this: “I see Robyn under the deck”. Robyn is out of the game. The last person found, wins. The first person found becomes “it” for the next round.
