Dinosaur Games for Toddlers

There are few topics that capture the imagination of small children quite like dinosaurs do. These are real life monsters that can be emulated, which is a fun activity for playtime. There are other, more organized games and crafts that could involve dinosaurs and are appropriate for toddlers. These could be part of a dinosaur-themed birthday party, or simply provide a fun way to while away the afternoon.
  1. Dinosaur Finger Puppets

    • Finger puppets provide hours of playtime.

It&'s easy and fun for young children to make dinosaur puppets or cut-outs from colored construction paper. Just trace the outline of the dinosaur of choice onto the paper, and then cut this out with a pair of safety scissors. An easy way to transform this cut out into a puppet is by cutting two circles at the bottom, and then creating the illusion of legs by sticking two fingers through these holes. Clothespins make great spikes for a stegosaurus, without the danger of cutting oneself.

    Dinosaur Hide and Seek

    • Traditional Hide and Seek gets a boost with dinosaur role playing.

To combine a learning experience about dinosaurs with the traditional toddler favorite of "hide and seek," participants of this game choose the dinosaur of their choice to dress up as or imitate. The Tyrannosaurus Rex could be the character that hides behind a tree or in a corner first, and then has to go look for the other dinosaurs that are hiding. A "safe" zone can be designated that the hunted dinosaurs must run back to, where they can wait for the round to be over. Any dinosaurs that get tagged outside of the safe zone would then be the next T-Rex.

    Dinosaur Memory

    • The game of Memory helps improve concentration.

Another version of a traditional children&'s game that has been adapted to involve dinosaurs is the card game "Memory." In a dinosaur Memory deck of cards, there are pairs of different dinosaur types that match. All the cards are placed face down, out of order. When it&'s the child&'s turn to play, she is allowed to overturn two cards. If the dinosaurs are the same, the child takes the pair and keeps playing. If the dinosaurs do not match, she must turn the pair back over and it is the next player&'s turn. This game helps improve the knowledge and recognition of different types of dinosaurs, and also improves memory and concentration skills. There are online versions available as well.
