Children's Games for Thanksgiving

If consuming delicacies and watching TV with the family does not get your children excited over Thanksgiving, maybe some holiday-themed games will. Make a new Thanksgiving Day tradition and show children how to liven up the day with fun activities. On the days leading up to Thanksgiving and on the day itself, children can play various games to enhance their holiday spirit and enjoyment of "Turkey Day."
  1. Cornucopia Confusion

    • For this game, children take on names of Thanksgiving fruits and vegetables, as they may appear in a cornucopia. One child serves as the leader and assigns each child a cornucopia name, such as "Apple," "Corn," "Cranberry" and "Turkey." With the children sitting on chairs in a circle, the leader calls out two names (some players may have the same name), at which point players quickly switch places. When the leader says, "The cornucopia has tipped over!" players stand up and all players--including the leader--race to find a new position. Whichever player fails to find a seat becomes the new leader.

    Thanksgiving Jingo

    • Activities and games manufacturer Gary Grimm & Associates produces seasonal "Jingo" titles, including "Thanksgiving Jingo." When playing this "Bingo"-style game, children learn Thanksgiving facts and information. After hearing a clue or question, players mark off Thanksgiving-related image and words on their cards, rather than cover numbers. Images and words may include "Cornucopia," Mayflower," "Native Americans," "Pumpkin Pie" and "Succotash."

    Thanksgiving TV Bingo

    • Watching football games and parades remain popular Thanksgiving activities, and children may combine those activities with printable bingo games found at a variety of fun game sites from the likes of Disney, Crayola or others. To play the game, users ensure that they have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on their computer. While watching TV, kids call out actions, items or people one at a time upon seeing them on the screen. If the phrase or word appears on players&' cards, they put a penny on the corresponding square. The first player to complete a row of five diagonal, horizontal or vertical squares wins.

    Turkey Hunt

    • On Thanksgiving Day, a leader sends children out of the room and hides index cards featuring turkey pictures or stickers. Upon returning, the player finding the most turkeys wins and becomes the new leader. For an alternate turkey hunting game, one child--the "farmer"--enlists aid from his "helpers" (other children) in finding a hidden small toy turkey. "Helpers" gobble quietly if the "farmer" is far away from the turkey, and gobble more loudly as the "farmer" gets closer to the turkey.

    Turkey Trot

    • Outdoors for Thanksgiving Day football, children race down a playing field holding a turkey mascot in "Turkey Trot Game." For the mascot, a leader stuffs a brown bag with crumpled newspaper and draws on a face, or tapes a colored-paper turkey head to a football. Kids position their backs to one another and link elbows, with one kid holding the mascot. The first pair reaching the finish line without dropping its bird or unlinking arms wins.

    Turkey Pardon/&'Thanksgiving Day

    • Players try to avoid sending their turkey to the oven in "Turkey Pardon/Thanksgiving Day," an online game accessible at sites such as Primary Games and Y8. When completing Thanksgiving-oriented word puzzles, players gets cooked if they accumulate too many wrong letter guesses.

    Turkey To Go!

    • With a fork seeking him for Thanksgiving dinner, Turkster tries collecting his loose feathers before time runs out in the online "Turkey to Go!" game, accessible at sites like Addicting Games and Primary Games. Moving Turkster with their mouse, players also collect various corn power-ups to help Turkster reach his goals. Should the flying fork catch Turkster, players cannot collect feathers or move. Players advance to the next level upon collecting all required feathers.
