Doll Games to Play

In Lise Eliot&'s book, "Pink Brain Blue Brain," Eliot states that playing with dolls helps children develop nurturing and social skills, particularly when they tap into their imagination and role-play tea parties or parenting functions. You can also organize games involving dolls for kindergarten classes, playgroups and birthday parties. These activities are fun and include elements of creativity, observation and interaction with peers.

What&'s Different?
- Fisher-Price recommends having a dolly tea party and playing the game "What&'s Different about Dolly?" Each child takes turns taking her doll outside of the room and making a change. For example, she can modify the doll&'s hairstyle, clothing or add an accessory. When she reenters the party room, the other children try to guess what change was made to the doll.
Russian Dolls
- This activity is designed for a group of children and takes place over two days. It starts off with a craft of making Russian dolls. For younger children you may need to do most of the work ahead of time, but older children should be able to take on more responsibility. Each child needs three plastic bottles of different sizes, such as a 2-liter, 1-liter and 1/2-liter pop bottle, with the wrappers removed. Cut the spouts and bottoms off the bottles. Completely cover all of the bottles with masking tape; make sure it is smooth. Draw the Russian doll design on each bottle; use the Activity Village template as a guide. Each child paints her three dolls. Ideally, each child should pick a different main color for her dolls. When the paint is dry, add a coat of varnish to the dolls for finishing. The next day, children can play a Russian doll mix-up game. For a warm-up, mix up all of the doll pieces over a table and allow children to locate their three pieces and stack them. Then, hide all pieces around the room and challenge children to find their dolls and assemble them.
Fashion Show
- Kids Birthday Party Guide suggests organizing a doll fashion show. Set out a basket of doll clothes and accessories and encourage children to bring outfits from home. Tell children to dress up their dolls in a theme of their choice. Set up the living room or classroom with a make-shift catwalk and other decorations. When the children are ready with their models, start the music and have them strut their dolls down the stage. Children can even dress up to match their dolls. Award each participant with a distinctive prize, such as the most classy and the most exotic outfits.
