Patchwork Soup
You can make a delicious soup to take the chill out of your bones. Challenge each family member to find two things in the refrigerator or pantry that they think would go well in a soup, from pasta and grains to vegetables and protein. Lay all of the ingredients on the counter and discuss how to best combine them into a nice warm soup. If you need help, search the internet for recipes that use similar ingredients to figure out how to combine them most effectively. Then enjoy your piping hot treat with some toasted bread.
Rainbow Ice Candles
You can spend several cold nights making rainbow ice candles to decorate the yard or front path. Fill some buckets with several inches of cold water and let them sit outside overnight until frozen. Then add another layer of very cold tap water, this time mixed with food coloring, and let it freeze overnight again. Each night, add another layer in a different color. When you get to the top layer, place an empty tin can directly in the center of each bucket and pour the water around it. When the top layer freezes, you can place a candle in the indentation and light it to make a rainbow ice candle. Consider lining your walk with these candles.
Glow in the Dark Snowball Fight
Snowball fights are fun during the day, and can also be just as fun at night. Wear glow in the dark necklaces or put glow in the dark stickers in various places on your clothes before you begin. If you'd like, create piles of snow in a yard or park area for you to hide behind. Wait until it gets very dark, and then start a snowball fight, sneaking up on each other by finding the glow in the dark clues on each player, and lobbing snowballs accordingly.
