Relay Games for Kids

When you want your kids to burn energy and get exercise, get them playing some fast-paced games. Relay games, in particular, are ideal for large groups of children. You will need minimal equipment and a large area to play some entertaining relay games.
  1. Mystery Food Relay

    • Gather the kids in a large room and divide them into two teams. Place 10 food items in each of two separate paper bags, making sure that each bag has the same foods. Include both tasty and not-so-tasty foods. Set the two bags on two separate chairs at one side of the room. Line the teams up on the other side of the room directly across from the chairs. When you say "Go," the first player in each line races to the bag, pulls out a food item without looking inside and eats it. As soon as he completely swallows the food, he races back to his team and prompts the next player in line to continue the race. The game ends when one team has all its players back in line with all the food items gone from their bag.

    Backseat Driver

    • Prepare two short obstacle courses side by side in a play area. Use things like chairs and traffic cones. Divide the kids into two teams and line up each team behind an obstacle course. Blindfold the first player in each team&'s line. When you say "Go," the first player and the second player in each team walk the obstacle course, with the second player giving instructions to the blindfolded first player. If the first player hits an obstacle, the pair has to start over. Once they make it back to their team, the second player becomes the blindfolded driver and the next player in line becomes the backseat driver. The first team to have all its players back in line after completing the course wins the game.

    Shoe Box Relay

    • Gather enough shoe boxes for every player. Tape the tops of the boxes to the bottoms and cut out a hole at the top of each box for the players&' feet to fit inside. Divide the players into two teams and line them up on one side of the play area. When you say "Go," the first player on each team has to make it to the opposite side of the area and back to his team without tripping in his shoes. If a player falls, he has to start over. The first team to have all its players make it back in line wins the game.
