Scavenger Hunt
Different lists of things to look for during travel are available to print. Age levels vary for these games. A child who reads can play scavenger hunt games alone. The entire family or group can also play. Each person except the driver should have a printed sheet of things to find and cross off the list. Adults may also create a typed list of places and things they know the family will encounter on the trip.
Travel Bingo
A variety of Bingo general and specific games can be printed from the Internet. Places, things, types of vehicles, businesses, traffic and travel signs, and even simple colors or shapes can make a Bingo game fit the ages of children. Bingo can be played alone or with a group. Adults can also decide whether to print off Bingo cards that are exactly alike or a little different from one another.
States and Plates
License plate games can include a simple listing of states or a game with the license plate of each state printed on the page. Kids can watch for and scratch off the state plates alone or with a group.
Traffic Games
Crayola.com is one site that offers free printable games, including a detour game board and a traffic game. Other board games are offered for free printing by other sites. An adult can choose the type of game suitable for the size of the group and the age levels of the children before printing games.
Two-player Games
Tic-tac-toe, lines and boxes game sheets, ship battle, and hangman are some of the two-player printable games. Several copies of these games will help keep pairs of children busy competing with one another. Divide the group into pairs. Change pairs often to keep the games fresh and the competition ongoing throughout the travel time.
Individual Games
If traveling with only one child, or if there is a large age difference in children, you can use individual games to entertain a child by himself. Mazes, hidden objects, color by number, map activities and crosswords are a few of the games that can be chosen for a specific age.
Games with Parts
Board games with individual pieces can be printed from the Internet. Teacherhelp.org offers a variety of card, board, dice and other games. ABCteach.com has many printable file-folder games where the game board and parts are kept in a folder.
Books with Games
Many books are available in stores or online. You also can find reproducible or one-use individual or group games and activities books.
