Mouse Mess File Folder Games

The children's picture book "Mouse Mess" by Linnea Riley tells the story of a hungry mouse in search of a snack in a human kitchen and the mess he makes on his quest for food. These file folder games will expand on the story and get the children to use the lessons to think beyond the pages of the book. A file folder game is a themed game about any chosen subject adapted so that all the playing parts or pieces fit within a paper file folder for easy access and storage.
  1. Build a Sandwich

    • Draw different sandwich contents on colored paper. Include normal sandwich items such different types of breads and rolls, cheese, meats, pickles, onions and lettuce. Make unexpected or incorrect items such as a paper spoon, a page from a book, a bug or a tire. Build paper sandwiches with various items from the folder and challenge the kids to figure out which items do not belong in each sandwich. Print the name of the items on a list. Tell the kids to try to figure out which word goes with which picture. To help teach the words in other languages, write the words in the language the children are learning and see if they can figure out the correct word for the item. You can group the kids into teams and use a timer to see which team finishes first and gets the most words correct.

    Food Match

    • Use plastic sheets to write on with erasable markers. List the names of the original food sources for different food items. Examples might be a pig for bacon, a cow for milk, a tree for apples, a wheat stalk for flour or a lake for fish. Cut out pictures of the items for the kids to match to the list and see if they can get all the correct matches. Add new food items each time. Include a variety of permanent lists in the folder to use for the game. Another version of the same game is to cut out pictures of both the food and food source items. Mix them up and see how many correct matches the kids can make.

    Food Card Games

    • Alter classic kids card games and make a Mouse Mess version. Play a food match memory game. Make pairs of matching pictures of different food items found in the refrigerator and kitchen cupboards. Cut out square pieces of paper, cardboard or card stock in the same size and glue one picture on each square. Turn all the cards upside down and mix them up. Arrange them in a grid pattern upside down so only the back of the square cards show. Each child will turn over two cards in an attempt to find matching pairs. If the player does not find the match, he turns the cards upside down again in the same spot and lets the next player take a turn. The point is to find the most matching food pairs. You can also use a deck of cards and glue the matching pictures over the card numbers. Another idea is to play a food version of Go Fish. Deal out seven cards to each player. The players take turns asking for a match to any card in their hand. If she get a match, the player sets it on the table. If she does not get a match, she draws a card from the pile. The child with the most matched pairs on the table after the first person runs out of cards in their hand wins the game.
