Color Matching Games for Kids

Whether you're a parent or a teacher, you want to make sure the children in your charge learn and have fun doing it. With the attention spans of most little ones, you may find teaching can turn into a difficult job. Teach the kids more about colors by playing some entertaining color matching games.
  1. Get into the Hoop

    • Prepare for this color matching game from the website Preschool Rainbow by first setting up a circle of different-colored hula hoops. Have the kids gather around the circle of hoops, walking around them while you play some upbeat music. At a random moment, turn the music off and give the kids an instruction like "Place your right hands in the blue hula hoop" or "Make pairs of three in the red hula hoop." Any players who perform unsuccessfully sit out one round. Continue the game until you run out of instructions. See which children understand your instructions and let one of them take over for you.

    Colors of the World

    • Gather the children in a circle to play this game from Do-It-101.com. Pick one color such as blue or green and have the child sitting on your left say one object of that color. For instance, if you chose the color red, the player can say "heart" or "lava." Continue around the circle until all of the children have stated one thing made of that color. For the next round, pick a new color and have the player on your right start this time. If you want to play the game outside, have the children bring back things made of the color you pick, such as leaves, petals and branches. The game ends when you run out of colors.

    Searching for Colors

    • Prepare for this game from the website Creative Kids at Home by first cutting up several colors of yarn into six-inch pieces. Once you have 10 pieces of different-colored yarn for every player, hide the pieces around the play area. Make a list of the colors of yarn used, making sure to include primary colors like red, blue and yellow. Hand the lists out to all of the players and have them all look around the play area for yarns of the colors they need. The first player to find all 10 pieces has to go through the yarn with you and identify every color by name. If she does this correctly, she wins the game.
