Playground Kindergarten Games

For the short amounts of time kindergartners get to spend on the playground, they can think of several activities on their own to capitalize on their breaks from the classroom. But for some more organized fun that brings all of the children together, try having your students play some games during their time on the playground.
  1. Get into the Hoop

    • Spread out several different colored hula hoops around the play field. You want to have at least three different colors of hula hoops to play the game. Assemble the students around the hula hoops and instruct them to walk around them until you say something. At a random moment, give the kids an order concerning the hula hoops, such as "Stick your right foot in a yellow hoop" or "Make groups of three in red hula hoops." Continue as long as desired.

    Split the Pairs

    • Play this game on the playground with an odd-numbered group of children. Pick one child to be "It," just like in the game of tag. Then, have the rest of the kindergartners pair up with each other and hold hands. When you say "Go," the child playing "It" runs and tries to tag each of the pairs. If he tags just one partner, the pair joins him in his quest to tag all of the other pairs. The game works well whether you want the kids to play in the field of the playground or around the swings and slides. The game ends when only one pair remains and wins.

    Four Square

    • Have the kindergartners play this traditional recess game. Before the game begins, use chalk to draw a square eight feet long on each side. Divide that into four squares with four feet on each side. Gather the kids around and have four children occupy the squares, one square per child. Hand one of the players a bouncy ball and tell him to bounce the ball so that it bounces once in his own square and then moves into another square of his choosing. The recipient of this ball has to let the ball bounce once in her square and then direct the ball's bounce to another square. Any time a player allows the ball to bounce more than once in her square, she gets replaced by another child. Continue the game until you want to move on to a new activity.
