Children's Games With Paddles

While there are many card, dice or board games that children can play anywhere, games with paddles often get forgotten because many have to be played outdoors. However, paddle games are some of the best to play as a child, and a couple of these can also be played indoors.
  1. Ping-Pong

    • Ping-Pong is a popular paddle game played by children of all ages. It's an easy game to learn and easy to set up with a folding ping-pong table. Often called "table tennis," this game is played with two players hitting a ping-pong ball to their opponent over a net. If the ball goes off the table, the opponent gets the point. The paddles for Ping-Pong are small and wooden with a rubber coating that adds traction and additional bounce when hitting the ball.

    Pickleball

    • Pickleball is a combination of tennis, badminton and Ping-Pong and is not only a fun game but also a great workout for children. The game can be played on tennis courts, driveways or anywhere with a hard surface but works best being played on a badminton court. The game is played like tennis, although there are no "smashes" allowed and, thus, players cannot hit the balls mid-air within 7 feet of the net on either side. The paddles are small, somewhat square shaped and wooden. Often, these paddles have holes in them to help move them easier through air. Because the balls have holes through them also, it makes the game less about power and speed and more about patience, balance and planning.

    Paddleball

    • Paddleball is a one-player game many children have played, indoor or outdoor, since inexpensive versions of the game are sold at grocery stores for under $5.00. The game includes a wooden paddle with a rubber ball attached with a rubber string. The object of this paddle game is to hit the rubber ball in rhythm to keep it hitting the paddle every time. Children have fun setting new records of how long they can go. Although it's a one-player game, children can take turns and transform the game into a competition as to who can keep the ball bouncing longest.

    Pong

    • While Pong is a video game, it's still a paddle game and teaches children many of the same skills that traditional paddle games teach, such as patience and planning. The virtual paddles are used to hit the virtual ball back and forth between two players. Basically, Pong is a digital version of Ping-Pong. While outdoor games provide added exercise, Pong can still be mental stimulation for sick days and rainy days.
