How to Make an Old Fashoned Sling Shot

Old-fashioned slingshots, such as the type the cartoon character Dennis the Menace uses, are easy to make. Old fashioned slingshots are not only easy to make but also cheap to make. You can find most of the items needed to construct the slingshot in your backyard or inside the home. Because the process of making an old-fashioned slingshot requires a knife, children should be supervised when making this project.

Things You'll Need

  • Forked stick
  • Knife
  • Electrical tape
  • 2 large rubber bands

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a forked stick. The ideal stick will be long with two branches that fork off to either side. The stick should look like the letter Y.

    • 2

Cut your stick so that the bottom is flat and the branches that fork out are close to the same length. Cut the edges of the stick straight so that there are no pointy edges. Pointy edges can harm children.

    • 3

Cut away any bark and make two indentations three centimeters (a little more than an inch) from the top of the forked branches.

    • 4

Wrap the handle of the stick (the part without the fork) with electrical tape. Start at the bottom, wrapping the tape around the stick. Stop when you reach the part of the stick where the branches begin to fork. The tape will add a little cushion and stop the wood from scraping the hands of those who use it.

    • 5

Cut the rubber band, making it one large strip of rubber. Do the same to the second rubber band.

    • 6

Fold the piece of leather in half horizontally and make two small cuts about a quarter of the way in on each side.

    • 7

Thread the rubber bands through the holes in the leather. Thread the bands up through the first hole and down through the second.

    • 8

Tie the ends of the rubber bands around the indentations you made in the forks of the stick to complete your old-fashioned slingshot.
