Child Team Building Activities

With a group of children in your charge, you may notice that some of the kids do not play well with the others. Oftentimes, this is due to a lack of bonding between the children. To get the kids in a cooperative mood, allow them to engage in some fun team building activities.
  1. Quick Name

    • Start your team building session by playing this icebreaker game. Assemble all of the children into a circle. Give one of the kids a beach ball. He has to say his name and say a word that relates to teamwork. After he states this information, he throws the ball to a random player in the circle. Once the next player has the ball in her hands, she has to state all of the players' names that came before her, as well as her own name and a new teamwork-related word. Any player who forgets a name from the sequence has to give another teamwork-related word for every name that she forgot. This continues until all of the children have had a turn.

    Back Seat Driver

    • Prepare for the game by setting up two separate, yet similar, obstacle courses using items like traffic cones. Divide the kids into two teams and line them up behind a starting point. Blindfold the first player on each team. On the count of three, the second player stands behind the blindfolded child and directs him through the course. If a player hits an obstacle, both children have to return to the starting point and begin again. Once the course is completed, the second player is blindfolded and the next player in line becomes the back seat driver. The first team to have all of its players back at the starting point wins the game

    Fill the Bottle

    • Play this game outside during the summer. Prepare by gathering some items--two empty soda bottles, a bucket full of water and two small cups of equal size. Divide the children into two teams. Each team picks one member to lie down about ten yards away from their team's starting line, with a soda bottle perched on the forehead. When you say "Go," the first players in each line fill up their cups with water from the bucket and head to their member on the ground. Taking turns, teammates must fill up the bottle with the water from their cups and head back to the end of the line, prompting the next person to perform the same task. The first team to fill up the group's soda bottle wins the game.
