Games to Learn English Grammar

According to Education.com, the challenge in getting school-age children to enjoy learning about the English language and grammar is to "find games that are the perfect marriage of educational value and fun." Various board games are available to suit different ages. Whether you're trying to entertain young ones in an academic setting or spending leisure quality time with your daughter at home, spelling, grammar and strategy games provide fun.
  1. Language Launch

    • Intended for ages 10 and up and suitable for two to four players, Wiebe, Carlson &Associates' Language Launch offers students a fun and challenging way to master grammar. Four player cards are included, each with three rocket ship images on them. The object is to use color-coded pawns to move from the base of your ship to the nose. Kids do this by turning the spinner on each turn and correctly answering corresponding questions. Material covered includes "word forms, idioms, paragraph correction, punctuation, reading comprehension" and sentence construction. Spelling, vocabulary and parts of speech are also tested. Questions in this game utilize scientific knowledge particular to space ships. The player who reaches the top of all three of his rocket ships first wins. More than 300 question cards are included as well as answer keys and four writing master guides.

    Parts of Speech Bingo

    • Parts Of Speech Bingo offers a fun, creative twist to a favorite traditional game. Students compete against one another to fill their cards in sequence. Kids answer questions regarding sentence structure, practice how to identify eight parts of speech and learn how to use words in sentences. It's suitable for three or more players and intended for students ages 8 and up. Thirty-six playing cards, 700 marker chips and a storage box are included. This is a lively game that provides kids with the opportunity to interact and work on their communication and socialization skills.

    Sentence Challenge

    • Sentence Challenge enables players to learn and strengthen English grammar skills by building sentences utilizing the format of who, what, where and when? Suitable for children ages 7 to 10 and intended for one to four players or two teams, the game features four levels of play. Game pieces include phrases of words and players must piece together the little cards to complete sentences. Sentences can be formed in two directions --row and column--allotting for more variety and creative thinking. Subjects, predicates and prepositional phrases are offered and explored. Bonus point spaces apply. Youths choose a specific format for each game. This format is what dictates how a winner is determined. More than 200 tiles are included with a game board.
