Online
Visit the "Puzzlemaker" section of the Discovery Education website and click on "mazes" or go to the "Make Your Own Puzzles" section of the Teachers' Corner website and click on "Maze Maker."
Enter your maze's title.
Select a shape for your maze if such options are available. Options might include circle, rectangle, wheel, escape and cut-outs.
Specify a size for the maze.
Select the path style if such options are available. Options might include random paths, mostly horizontal paths, mostly vertical paths, checkerboard paths, concentric squares and inward X. Select a start and finish arrow style if such options are available.
Click "Create My Puzzle" on the Discovery site or "Generate Maze" on the Teachers' Corner site and print the maze. Make additional copies if you wish.
By Hand
Use a ruler and pencil to draw a grid with at least 10 boxes in each direction.
Designate one box in the grid as the "Start" box and one as the "Finish" box.
Use your eraser to remove lines from the grid to create a snaking "path" between the start and finish boxes.
Erase additional lines to create dead-end paths branching away from the correct path. Do not create additional paths that lead from from the start to finish; the maze will be more difficult if only one path exists.
Trace over your maze with a pen or marker to make it bolder. Make photocopies if you wish.
