List of Ideas for a Pre-School Scavenger Hunt

Keeping young minds engaged requires variety, creativity and the element of surprise. Preschool-age children enjoy playing games, playing with toys and finding new things. Entertain the troops outdoors by sending them in search of nature-related objects, or keep them inside on a rainy day to seek familiar items. Whether you're a parent, caregiver or teacher, scavenger hunts offer an opportunity to stimulate the imagination.
  1. Nature Scavenger Hunt

    • Enjoy a sunny day outside with your students or children while teaching your preschoolers about nature. Preschool Rock's Nature Scavenger Hunt enables young children to use their imaginations in search of objects related to nature. Kids this age benefit from carrying a group of pictures rather than a list with words as they search for answers. Color-code items of same categories and encourage participants to learn the new words and categories as they play. Suitable items, categories and subject matter include animals, flowers, birds, plants and leaves, bugs, rocks, trees and other natural elements such as dirt, grass and acorns.

Brown paper lunch bags are small enough for little hands to carry and big enough to hold a few items during the hunt. Hand out one per child prior to the start of play.

    Household Scavenger Hunt

    • Spend the afternoon searching your home for familiar objects and toys your young child will recognize and need to know. Break the house into sections by individual rooms---kitchen, living room, dining room, bathroom, bedroom, office and garage. Use construction paper of different colors for different areas and attach images of items to be found. Draw the items with markers or place stickers on the cards. Search for common household materials you'd like your child to know. Kitchen items could include a blender, spoon, bowl, cup, plate, can opener, sandwich bag, apple, cereal box and ice-cream scoop. For extra fun, move bedroom items on her list to out-of-the-ordinary places around her room.

    Back-to-School Scavenger Hunt

    • Enchanted Learning's Back-to-School Scavenger Hunt is a fun way to encourage young ones to get to know their peers. The process of seeking out information requires kids to interact. Supply each child with pictures of items they can hunt for in the classroom and on the playground. Place children in groups of two or more for the hunt. Toys, books, sleep mats and pillows, lunch boxes, juice boxes, pencils, crayons and markers are all appropriate materials for this age group.

For an added twist to Back-to-School Scavenger Hunt, prior to playing this game, write each child's name on an index card, mix them up and hand one to each child---their partner is the first "object" to find. Ask kids to move around the room and ask classmates their names until they find their partner. Once they've found their partner, instruct the pairs to ask each other's ages, parents' names and favorite TV show or movie.
