Relay Races and Challenges
Kids love to participate in races and challenges. Set up a relay race such as a cotton ball transfer race where kids form teams or pairs and must carry a cotton ball on a spoon across a long distance (across a large room or backyard) and pass it off to their teammate. Water balloon tosses are also a good choice.
Board Games With Strategy
Board games are an excellent choice for children of all ages. By the age of 10, kids are ready for a bit of strategy in games that forces them to think ahead and make decisions. Games such as Mancala, Stratego, Battleship and Monopoly are all appropriate choices. Read the ages listed on the box of each game you consider to make sure it's suitable for 10-year-olds.
Pigs on the Loose
This is a "wolf" chasing game. Pick one person to be the "wolf." The wolf counts to 50. During this time only one person (pig) hides, the rest go to a "pig pen." The wolf opens his eyes and goes to the pen to see who is missing. The wolf then sets out on the hunt to find the missing pig. As the wolf looks for the missing pig, other pigs can escape one at a time. As the wolf catches pigs, he brings them back to the pen. The game is over once all the pigs have been captured and returned to the pen. Then it's someone else's turn to be wolf and the game starts over again.
Scavenger Hunt
Put together a scavener hunt for 10-year-olds to play. Make a list of items they have to find and set them off to collect each one. The person who comes back first with a finished list wins. This can be done in your own home and backyard, in your neighborhood, or even in a park. For a slight twist on the traditional scavenger hunt, give each person or team a camera and have them take photos of the items on the list instead of collecting them.
Rock, Paper, Scissors
This classic game never gets old. It's a game that can be played anywhere, and basically in complete silence as you don't even have to say, "Rock, paper, scissors." You simply lift and lower your fist three times, then show your choice. Kids can have rock, paper, scissor tournaments where one person challenges another and the next person plays the winner and so on.
