Play Out a Story
If your little girl isn't old enough to read, then read to her a fairytale with mermaids, such as "The Little Mermaid," or let her watch a mermaid tale on DVD. Another charming mermaid story on film she can watch is "Splash." Once your daughter is familiar with a mermaid story, she can enact the tale with her dolls. For this, she can use either two dolls to represent the mermaid, one with legs and one with a tail, or she can use the mermaid dolls that have legs, but the tail is a fabric covering, like a skirt. Dolls games are typically simple enactments of events. Start her imagination with a story or film and let her take it from there. Encourage her to change the story or add to it after it ends.
Water Fun
If your daughter's mermaid doll can get wet, then she can play mermaid games in the swimming pool or the bathtub. Your daughter can play at being a mermaid with them. Or she can play a game in which she's swimming with the mermaids, much like you can swim with the dolphins on vacation. Of course, you should supervisor her if she's swimming in the pool. Most likely, her mermaids will dive into the water and your daughter will plunge in after them. To help with your daughter's game, consider buying her swimming flippers. For more of a mermaid feel, get her one of the mono flippers, in which both feet are secured to the same flipper.
