Hangman on Paper
The classic way to play hangman is with a paper and pencil. Any number of people can play, with one person in charge of choosing a word the others must guess, drawing the dashes that represent the number of letters in the word, and the gallows from which the poor man might fall if no one guesses the word. Players take turns guessing letters, with one piece of the hanged man drawn for each incorrect guess.
Educational Hangman
The collection of hangman games at Manythings.org are designed for those learning English as a second language. It has games that range from kindergarten level to difficult, then some games just for fun. This website makes a game out of learning a rather difficult language. On the website, the gallows and the man are drawn for players. If they guess the word correctly, the man suddenly appears, kicks over the gallows and stands, arms outstretched. Categories include farm animals and meat, high-frequency words, adjectives, occupation/jobs and the solar system.
Interactive Hangman
The site Fun-with-words.com provides a version that allows players to choose categories of words such as animals, countries, common words, movie titles and phrases. Those who do well enough might be added to the hall of fame for high scorers.
Halloween Hangman
Halloween hangman is a Halloween-themed version of the game that lets players choose words related to the holiday. Hangman fans will find the game at The Dimension's Edge website, dedge.com. It has a soundtrack, as well as a skull that chides the player, saying things like: "Don't mind me. Just hanging around!" or "Even a blind pig finds a truffle every once in a while!" or "You're supposed to keep me from hanging!" Your score is automatically added, and the skull never seems to run out of things to say.
