Snowball Throw
A regular softball throw fits the winter carnival theme when transformed into a snowball. Cover a regular softball with a thin layer of glue followed by glitter. Another option is to coat it with a glitter spray. This gives the softball a shimmery, snow-like appearance for the carnival game. Make a target out of a large piece of plywood. Cut two or three circles out of the plywood as targets. Any player tossing the snowball through one of the holes wins. You can make the holes different sizes and award more points for a ball that goes through a smaller hole. Paint a winter scene on the plywood to make it more festive. Another option is to have the players throw the snowballs at a pyramid of plastic bottles to try to knock them over.
Ring the Snowman
This carnival game adds a twist to the traditional ring toss. Instead of a stake, let the players toss rings around snowmen. Make your own snowman stakes using Styrofoam craft balls. The balls are available at craft stores in several different sizes. Buy three balls in slightly different sizes to create each snowman. Slide the three balls onto a wooden dowel. Draw on facial features and glue buttons down the front. Cut a strip of felt and tie it around the snowman's neck. The players toss rings toward the snowmen earning a prize if they make it around. You can have the snowmen at varying distances to designate different values of prizes.
Snowflake Balloon Pop
Balloon pop games are also popular at carnivals. Choose balloons with snowflakes printed on them to tie-in the winter theme. One option with the snowflake balloons is a dart toss game where the players try to pop the balloons with darts. Another option is to place a small piece of paper inside each balloon with a certain symbol or number. The player pops the balloon to find the paper inside. The marking on the paper determines which prize the player receives.
Snow Search
Players dig through a pile of snow to find a prize in this game. If the winter carnival is held outdoors, hide the prizes in a large container of real snow. If the carnival is held indoors, make snowballs out of crumpled paper. Hide the prizes in the crumpled paper. Ideas for prizes include rubber balls, plastic animals and squirting bath toys. For each ticket the player buys, he can search through the snow until he finds one toy.
