Outside Treasure Hunt Ideas

An outside treasure hunt is an ideal game for a pirate-themed birthday party. However, this idea can also apply to many types of themes, even those that involve girls' parties such as an Alice in Wonderland party or a bunny rabbit theme. Rabbits like to hide, and a treasure hunt is an ideal game for this type of theme.
  1. Hiding the Treasure

    • Treasure hunts typically take place in a park or backyard setting. If the hunt is for small children, hide the treasure in common places like behind a tree or a bush. However, if the treasure hunt is for older children, you can bury certain pieces in the yard and provide the kids with clues so that they can guess where you've buried the treasure.

There are several ways you can do this. Each child can look for treasure on her own with or without clues. Otherwise, you can split the children up into two or three groups, and you can divide the discovered treasure among all of the kids. Make sure you have enough toys (treasures) for all the kids. At the end of the hunt, make sure that each kid has at least one toy. Ask the kids to share if they have several toys.

    Type of Treasure

    • The type of treasure you plan on hiding can be anything such as boys or girls packaged toys like dolls and cars. However, you can also buy plastic gold coins, necklaces, mirrors and other items that look like old-fashioned treasure. Then, you can award the team with the most treasure items toys at the end of the hunt and give the other team different toys. The winning team gets first pick of the toys, and then the rest of the children can choose their toys.

    Map Treasure Hunt

    • A map treasure hunt is another idea that will work well for children who know how to read. Provide each child with a map that leads up to the treasure. You can also give one map to each team, and the kids can work together to find the treasure. If you like, you can combine clues with the map. For instance, the map will take them to a tree where there is a box with a clue inside. The map leads the kids to the clues, and the clues lead them to the treasure.
