Schoolyard Games for Kids

Schoolyard games are for children to play during recess, or even after school. It is a safe idea to give children outdoor safety rules if they are going to be spending time outdoors playing, such as what shoes to wear and their roaming boundaries. When coming up with schoolyard game ideas, plan games that are short and fun, in case the game is cut off due to the bell ringing.
  1. Flag and Freeze

    • Split a large area between two teams. Give each team three minutes to hide their flag somewhere in their area. After both teams hide their flags, they go to the other team's area to try to find their flag. One person on each team is the team sheriff. This person is in charge of tagging members of the opposite team while they are seeking a flag, which freezes them in place until one of their team members tags them to unfreeze them. The first team to find the other team's flag wins.

    Heads Up Seven Up

    • Seven children sit in a circle with blindfolds on. Select one child, by tapping on their shoulder, to be the "Seven." The seven walks around the circle and taps one person, then sits back in their spot. The person who is tapped stands up, keeping their blindfold on. The teacher calls out "heads up seven up" and the students remove their blindfolds. The tapped student guesses which of the six students tapped them. If they guess correctly they win a prize, and the teacher taps a new person to be the seven. If the don't guess correctly, the same seven taps again in the next round.

    Bye Bye Balloon

    • Split the children into two or more teams and have them stand in lines, holding hands. Place a small balloon under the first child's neck, allowing them to hold it there by pressing their head down. Blow a whistle. The children will pass the balloon to the next one in line until it reaches the end with only their necks and heads. If a balloon flies out from a child's neck, they can use only their heads and necks to catch it. If the balloon hits the ground, the race starts all over at the first child. The team that gets its balloon to the last person in its line wins.

    Bouncing Ball Race

    • Play this game on the blacktop, or an area on solid ground. The children are divided into teams of six and placed in lines with five check posts. The first child throws the ball to the child at the second check post. That child dribbles the ball to the second post. The third child runs with the ball to the fourth post, and the fourth child walks backwards with the ball to the fifth post. The team that finishes first wins. You can add more posts to this game, or switch up the ideas, but make all of the kids do something with a ball.

    Airborne Ball

    • Divide the children into two or more teams. Each team gets a blanket and each member holds onto a section so it is pulled out and firm. The teams are lined up. Place a volleyball in the center of the first team's blanket. The teams are to pass the volleyball to the next team with only their blanket, pushing the ball into the air. The next team catches the ball in their blanket and passes it on. When it reaches the last team, they pass it back down the line to the first team.
