Ball-and-Cup
The cup-and-ball is an old toy dating back to the 1800s if not before. Jane Austen had a ivory cup-and-ball that she prized; an image of it can be found at Chawton House. By encouraging your children to hold contests with their cup-and-balls, they can have a lively and challenging game. The best part is since the cup-and-ball is really an outdoor toy, your children will have to go outside to play this game.
Hoop and Stick Game
Playing with the hoop and stick dates back to the ancient Greeks. Though deceptively simple, these hoops can be quite challenging to control. A perfect vintage game is to encourage your kids to hold hoop and stick races. This was a favorite game of Colonial children, and can quickly become a favorite again.
Nine Pins
Nine pins, also known as skittles, can be a good vintage game for kids, especially when played outside. What makes the outdoor version of the game so challenging is that the kid must take into account the unevenness of the ground. Nine pins is a game that dates back to the 14th century, and is an early form of candle pins and bowling as we know them today. After arranging the nine pins so that they stand upright on the ground, the kid must roll a ball from a distance to knock them over. This was also a favorite game of Colonial children.
