Spooky Games for Kids

Children often love the thrill of being scared, and Halloween is a great time to bring out some spooky, creepy games for kids to play. Older children also enjoy frightening games and stories during sleepovers, so don't limit yourself to October 31. Spooky games can be fun, but it is important to bear in mind the age of the children. Teenagers will enjoy more intense play than toddlers.
  1. Mummy Wrap Game

    • This spooky game is a hit for kids of all ages. It works best with at least four children. Divide the kids into equal teams and give each team several rolls of toilet paper. Start the game by turning on some creepy music. Choose one child on each team to be the mummy. Have the other kids wrap him in toilet paper until he is completely covered and looks like a mummy. The team that finishes their mummy first (no part of his body can be showing) wins. This game can also be played as a relay, with one child running down to tag his teammate after he is completely wrapped in toilet paper and then working to wrap the teammate, who then runs to the next future mummy. Whichever team is completely wrapped and across the finish line first wins.

    Fear Factor Trick or Treat

    • This spooky game is a big hit with older kids and teenagers. For materials, you will need a bunch of treats (candy, marshmallows or anything else that tastes good), a bunch of tricks that are edible but gross (crickets, sardines, pigs feet, worms) and cards that say trick or treat. Divide the kids into two teams and make sure each team will have the same types of items to eat, even though no one will know what they will be eating. Start the clock and let each team member draw a card. If it's a trick or a treat, they must choose one of the items and eat it. Teams must eat the item they have drawn before another member can draw for the next one. The team that eats all of their items in the shortest amount of time is the winner.

    Spider Web Game

    • This is a great game for younger kids because it is a little spooky and a lot of fun and can keep them safely occupied for quite a while, depending on the intricacy of the webs. For set up, clear a room of any breakables and drape a long piece of yarn over furniture to construct the base of the web. Then use long pieces of yarn, a different color for each kid who will be playing. At one end of each piece of yarn, tie a fun prize or a bag of goodies and hide that end somewhere around the room. Then starting wrapping the other end of the yarn with the prize all over the room, using the existing spider web base. Do this with other lengths of yarn until you have a jumble of yarn webs all over the room. To play the game, each kid starts with the free end of his color of yarn and must crawl over and around other pieces of the web to untangle it and get his prize.

Then determine how many guests will be attending the party as you will need one extremely long piece of yarn (several yards) for each guest. At one end you will tie a spider's ring and the other a prize or note revealing their prize. Hide the "prize" end somewhere in the room and start wrapping the yarn around the existing web base. Repeat with all the other pieces of yarn so that when you are done, you should have all the spider-ring ends at one end of the room, all the yarn in a tangled web in the middle of the room, and the "prize" end of each piece hidden in the room.

Now when you are ready to play, invite all the guests into the room and ask them to pick a spider. Then the guests start with the spider and somehow untangle their piece of yarn from the rest of the web to get to the other end (stepping over, under, and basically getting tangled in the spider web) and, ultimately, the prize.

This is a way to keep the kids busy and occupied for quite some time. Remember, the more difficult the web the longer it will take them to untangle it.

    Haunted House Hide and Seek

    • If you are having a Halloween party with a haunted house, then you have the perfect backdrop for a spooky game of hide and go seek. If a haunted house is not available, a basement can work just as well. Tell the kids a creepy story about an evil witch who lives in the basement or haunted house. One child can start out as the witch, counting to 100 as the others hide. Whoever gets caught first will be the next witch. Eerie background music and dark rooms are a must for this spooky game.
