Games to Play With Bible Scriptures

In Sunday school class or in a youth group, Bible scriptures are the focus of many meetings. If you are a teacher or a leader, you will want to teach students how to memorize and recognize certain Bible scriptures. Learning scriptures will enable your students to use them in their daily lives. Playing games to entertain the students will help make learning Bible scriptures fun and exciting.
  1. Word Mix-Up

    • One easy game is Bible Scripture Word Mix-Up. First, choose a Bible verse you would like to teach. Next, gather one index card for each word in the passage you are going to use. (If you would like to break your students up into groups, then multiply the number of note cards needed by the number of groups you will have.) Then, write one word from the scripture on each card, making sure that the verse has been copied in its entirety. To play the game, break up students into groups or leave as one group. Shuffle the word cards, making sure you keep sets separated for each group. Next, have the students try to arrange the words into the proper order. If students are broken into groups, have the students race to see which group can solve the puzzle fastest.

    Scripture Matching Game

    • Another easy game is a scripture matching game. Use this game when you are trying to review multiple passages at once. Again, you will need note cards, two per scripture verse you are reviewing. To create the game, write one half of a verse on one note card, and the second half on another note card. Mix up the cards and place them face down on a flat surface. To play the game, students will take turns flipping first one card, and then another face up. If the cards have the first and second half of the same verse on them, then the student keeps the set of cards. If the cards do not match, they are placed face down in the same position and play resumes. The object of the game is to collect the most sets of cards.

    Act It Out

    • Acting out scripture can be fun and active.

Another fun and active way to teach students Bible scriptures is to have them act it out. First start by reviewing the scripture and discussing what is happening in the story. How does each character react to what is going on? Who are they talking to and why? What are their motives? After reviewing a chosen scripture story, assign roles to the students, making sure to assign at least one narrator for the unspoken parts of scripture. Also, assign one student to be the "director." The director will follow along in the Bible as her peers are acting out the scripture. Should one of her peers speak out of turn, say an incorrect line, or display an incorrect reaction, the director will first correct the student and let him or her know what mistake was made. Then the director will have the students "take it from the top," starting the scripture story all over again. Only the director and narrator are given a Bible to read from; the other students must memorize their parts as real actors do. The scene can only be judged as successful once the students have gone from beginning to end without the director interrupting them to make corrections.
