Fun Outdoor Games for Youth Groups

Enjoy the spring or summer weather with outdoor games. Outdoor team games and races can appeal to children and teens of all ages and will help members of a youth group interact and get to know each other. Keep the size of your group in mind when choosing which games to play.
  1. Capture the Flag

    • This outdoor game can work well on a clear soccer field or even in a tree-filled yard or park. Divide the group into two teams and designate a large area as each team̵7;s ̶0;territory.̶1; Have each time hide a brightly colored bandanna or flag somewhere in its territory. When the game begins, players must try to steal the opposing team̵7;s flag and return it to their own team̵7;s territory without being tagged. In a wooded area such as a park or yard, the game involves more strategy, hiding and sneaking about. On a clear soccer field, the game becomes more about running. If a player is tagged in the opposing team̵7;s territory, he must go to a ̶0;jail̶1; location in that team̵7;s territory designated before the start of play. His teammates can attempt to rescue him from jail by getting safely to the jail and tagging him. If all the players on one team end up in jail, that team must forfeit the game. Otherwise, the first team to bring the opponent̵7;s flag to its own territory wins the game.

    Water Balloon Volleyball

    • This game provides a team challenge. Divide the group into teams of four to six players, and have each team collaborate to hold a large, fully stretched sheet. Teams must then use the sheet to launch a filled water balloon towards the opposing team. If the opposing team successfully catches the balloon in their sheet, they score a point, and can then toss the balloon back to the other team. You can play this with two teams and a volleyball net, or with multiple teams grouped in a circle. Save some extra water balloons for a water balloon fight after the game.

    Sardines

    • Try this game for an alternative to the classic hide and seek game. Instead of choosing one player to seek, choose one player to hide. The rest of the players must close their eyes and count to 50 or 100, and then spread out to look for the one hidden player. If a player finds that person, she must join him in his hiding spot. Every player who discovers this hiding spot must then join as well, until the hiding spot is overwhelmed with players. The last person to discover the hiding place becomes the next round̵7;s ̶0;it,̶1; and then gets to find a new hiding place.

    Silly Relay Races

    • Divide the group into teams of two, four or six for silly relay races. You can try the classic three-legged race, or the ̶0;balloon sandwich̶1; race in which two players must reach the finish line without dropping or popping a balloon sandwiched between their backs.

Try the sponge race, in which players have to dip a sponge into a filled water bucket at one end of the course, and then run to a bucket at the other end to squeeze out the water. The team with the most water in its bucket at the end wins.
