Hands-on Design
It should be obvious that no game is as fun as actively participating in a design project, so any opportunity to turn decorating into a game should be taken advantage of. One way to fulfill your child̵7;s creative ambitions is to allow them to decorate their own bedroom. The key to successfully decorating a child̵7;s room and not having it turn out too colorful is by supervising the process. Allow them to choose a color, but utilize it as an accent color in the room. Have them draw pictures of their choice concepts first, and then take some of those ideas and let your child and his or her friends help out with the process.
Room Decorator
This is good practice for the real thing if your child enjoys everything interior design has to offer. Sketch out some rough furniture from a top view and cut it out. Make couches, bookshelves, rugs, televisions, lamps and tables. The only limit is your child's imagination. Then draw out a rough floor plan of your house, or simply random-shaped rooms, being sure to draw in where the windows and doors would be. Then turn the project over to the future expert and let them decide what color the furniture should be and where everything would go in the designated space. After they̵7;re done, have them draw the room and decorate the walls and accents with colors and designs they think would look good.
Imagine Interior Design
Imagine̵7;s line of Nintendo DS games extensively covers everything from games on ice skating to interior design. ̶0;Imagine Interior Designer̶1; gives you customer challenges that you must solve, such as creating a princess-themed bedroom or making a whole room blue. The game actually allows you to apply concepts to a room, like patterns, textures and paint, and see the virtual result in the room. The game encourages creativity, and though some of the challenges might be too hard for younger players, everyone can have fun seeing the results of their designs.
Online Games
There are also free online games kids can play, such as at Home-Decor-Games.com, using real creativity to decorate an artificial environment. You can paint walls, move furniture and organize. And though most of the sites are targeted at young girls, the concepts can be applied to boys as well.
