Sign Language Games for Kids

For children who are learning sign language in school, regardless of whether they are deaf, sign-language games can make learning sign language fun. Most American Sign Language (ASL) games can be played in basic form, with beginning letters and numbers, or graduated to an intermediate or advanced level with more complex signs and concepts.
  1. Bingo

    • A number of ASL bingo games are available on the market, or you can create your own with images of signs from a book or printed from a website. The bingo cards feature images of signs for such things as emotions, concepts, letters and numbers. You can call out signs verbally or use your hands to spell out what players must find on their cards.

    Board Games

    • Many sign-language board games are available, mostly from retailers online, but also from specialty learning and teaching stores. Examples include Sign It!, in which players must spell out words to navigate the board. Other examples are the Keep Quiet Crossword Game, which is similar to Scrabble but uses ASL alphabet images on cubes instead of letters on a board, and Finger Alphabet Lotto, which requires students to match ASL letters with images on cards (for instance, a finger-spelled "v" for "violin").

    Telephone

    • Many sign-language games can be played without any equipment. Telephone is a game many kids play that involves whispering a word to the person next to you, and they whisper it to the person next to them, and so on. To play sign-language telephone, players sit in a circle or in a line and then finger-spell words to one another instead of whispering. They must hide what they are spelling from people farther down the line.

    Memory

    • All players sit in a circle, and, in sequence, each person signs a word from a themed concept. For example, if the concept is animals, one player might sign "elephant" while the next player signs "tiger." All players must pay attention. A starting player is chosen, and he must sign another player̵7;s animal, then that person must choose another player and sign her animal, and so on around the circle.
