How to Make a Number Search

A number search is an effective and fun way to reinforce various mathematical operations. You can use a number search to give students practice in addition, subtraction, division or multiplication. You also can vary the search, according to different ability levels. For instance, you might use a two-digit search for younger students and a five-digit search for older children.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the skill you want to emphasize. For instance, you might want to reinforce multiplying two digit numbers.

    • 2

Outline a grid on the graph paper that takes up about 1/2 to 3/4 of the page. Be sure to leave space at the bottom for the clues section.

    • 3

Write your clues first. For instance, the first clue might be:
      20 x 20 = __

    • 4

Write the answers to each clue in the grid at the top. Be sure to place them at varying positions within the grid. Consider placing them horizontally, vertically and diagonally.

    • 5

Fill in the other squares of the grid with random numbers.

    • 6

Instruct the students to answer the clues first and then go to the puzzle, find the answers and circle them.
