Scavenger Hunt
A scavenger hunt is an easy activity to put together whether you have just a few kids or a large group. Children can hunt individually or in small groups. Make a list of items that are found in nature such as leaves, pine cones and rocks. Each child or group needs to be given a copy of the list. The first person or group to fill the list is the winner. Simple items such as candy or small toys will make a great gift for the winner.
Tug of War
Bring a jump rope or any other rope along with you on your picnic for a tug of war contest. Separate children into two groups that have an equal number and similar sized children. Place the center of the rope over a puddle or other object to mark it. The group that pulls their opponents over the center mark first wins.
Wheelbarrow Race
Line up the children in pairs along a starting point. One child will be the wheelbarrow by walking on his hands while the other child walks behind him holding his feet. Blow a whistle or wave a flag to signify the start of the race. The first pair to reach the finish line wins. Adults who are willing to look silly can join in on this game too.
Reverse Tag
In a game of reverse tag, one person is chosen to be it. Unlike traditional tag, the person who is it will be chased by everyone else. Once she is caught, she is out of the game and the person who did the catching is the new "it." The last person left in the game is the winner.
Egg Race
For a larger group of people, separate them into small groups and place a basketful of eggs or any other small object in front of each group. Another basket needs to be set at least 20 feet from each full basket. Each person must put one hand behind his back and use the other hand to scoop up an egg with a spoon. He must then race to the empty basket and deposit the egg. Race back to the group and hand the next person in line the spoon. This continues until each person in the group has raced with the egg. The first group to empty the basket wins.
