Group Book
Create a sentence for the children to complete. Each child should complete the same sentence. For example write, ̶0;___ likes ___ .̶1; The children must fill in the blanks. The first blank will be their first name and the second blank is something they like. It is possible to write something like this; ̶0;John likes ice cream.̶1; Another student may write, ̶0;Mary likes running.̶1; Writing their first name should be easy for the children because it is familiar. After the children write their sentence compile all the sentences together into a book. Make copies of the book and have the children draw pictures in their book for each sentence. The children will have to read each sentence before drawing a picture.
Pass Along Story
Write words down on index cards and put them in a bag. The words should be a variety of nouns, verbs and adjectives such as ran, jump, yellow, pretty, crazy, cat, animal, etc. There should be at least 1 card in the bag per child playing the game. Have each child pick a card. The children should not show the words on their cards to anyone else. Begin the game by writing a sentence on a piece of paper such as, ̶0;Once upon a time in a land far away there was a beautiful castle.̶1; The first child writes the second sentence of the story using the word he drew. The paper is then pass to the next child who writes the next sentence. Each child adds a sentence to the story. When all the children have written a sentence, read the story out loud for all the children to hear.
Sentence Formation
Write five sentences about the children playing the game. The sentences should be simple such as; ̶0;Sally has a cat, ̶0;John likes pizza̶1; or ̶0;Betty plays games.̶1; Write the three words from each sentence on separate index cards. The first card should have the name of the person. Write the verb on the second card and the noun on the third card. Do this for each sentence. Place the sentences on the ground. Have the children take turns selecting three cards to form a sentence. EAfter the children have a turn, give them all a blank card. Have the children write a new word on the card and select two more cards to complete a sentence. It is up to them if they replace the name, noun or verb. Again have the children write the sentences on paper.
