Scout Games to Play Outside

Anyone who has been around a rowdy bunch of boys will know that the best way to keep that energy contained is to organize outdoor activities. Boy Scouts are probably best known for camping and hiking but also enjoy games involving running, jumping and tracking. To keep your scouts interested while perhaps learning a new skill or two, schedule outdoor games for your next meeting.
  1. Water Games

    • If you have a large number of scouts in your troop or are entertaining multiple troops at a jamboree, plan to divide them into smaller groups for team games. The winners can get out of kitchen duty or camp cleanup.

For a game similar to paintball but significantly less painful, try Ready Aim Fire. The object of this game is to shoot your opponent's light out with water. Each scout receives a water gun and a candle. Light the candle for each and set the candle on the ground near the the scout. The scouts should be about 10 feet apart based on the how far the water gun will shoot. Have a scout leader call "ready, aim, fire," and the scouts can begin shooting. Whoever wins can go on to the next shootout until a winner is declared.

Another popular water game is water balloon relay. Fill several small water balloons with water and tie tightly. They should be filled enough so that if they are dropped they will break but not so full that they break just by handling them. Line up several scouts in groups of four on one end of a field or other open area and corresponding groups of four on the other end. When the scout leader yells "Go!" the first scout in line on one end of the field must run as fast as possible with the water balloon beneath his chin to the scout waiting on the other side. Once he arrives he must maneuver the balloon from under his chin to the chin of the next scout without anyone touching the balloon with his hands. That scout then takes the balloon back across the field to the next scout. If the balloon falls and breaks, the scout must run back and start over. The first group to get everyone through wins.

    Scavenger Hunt

    • This game can be played with individual players or teams. To make it specific to Boy Scouts, have them hunt for things related to the 12 parts of the scout law. For example, in the scout law, the scout confirms that he is loyal. Have the boys find something that represents loyalty, like man's best friend, the dog. This can be a stuffed animal or picture of a dog hidden in the hunt area. The item representing reverent can be a cross or picture of a church. To make it more challenging, have the scouts first figure out what the 12 items are through a crossword puzzle or some other clue. The person or team to find all the clues wins.
