How to Make Up Treasure Hunt Clues

A treasure hunt is an entertaining game that is particularly enjoyable for groups of younger children. The key to a successful treasure hunt is creating a set of clues and a set of hiding spots that are challenging, but not frustrating, for the players. It is important to take the time to plot out and think about your clues in advance to ensure the best results.

  Consider the players who will be taking part in the game. You should consider the age of the players as well as the size of the group; larger groups will provide for quicker solutions, and younger players will need less complex clues.

  Consider the amount of time that you wish the hunt to take up. This can be achieved by adjusting either the difficulty or the quantity of the clues.

  Choose the areas that you wish your clues to lead players. Knowing all the spots you will use will allow you to order the clues to best suit the time and difficulty desired.

  Create a riddle for each clue. A simple two-line rhyme can make the hunt more entertaining for players than a simple statement such as "Find the largest tree in the yard."

  Write your clues so they point to a specific location when deciphered. Vague clues will frustrate players.

  Hide each card, save for the opening clue, at the appropriate locations in the order the clues are to be found. Be sure to hide the clue in such a way that it will not be stumbled upon accidentally while searching for other clues, but can be found once the riddle is cracked. A card hidden too well may cause players to find the right area but miss the card and assume they are wrong.
  
  As players solve a clue, it will lead them to the next clue until they find the final location, where the treasure awaits.
