File Folder Games for Intermediate Grades

A file-folder game is a simple game made of paper attached to a file folder and laminated. File-folder games are useful in the classroom--they are inexpensive to make, and children often can play them without assistance. A variety of file-folder games can be used in intermediate grades.
  1. Math games

    • Children can practice many math skills by playing file-folder games. The Little Pirate two-digit subtraction game reinforces subtractions concepts. Each of 12 pirates displays a two-digit subtraction problem on his shirt. The answer is on one of 12 hats. The child solves the problem and finds the hat with the correct answer. Once he finds the hat, he places it on the pirate's head.

The Frogs! Frogs! Frogs! three-digit addition game uses lily pads and frogs to help children learn addition with regrouping. Sixteen lily pads contain addition problems, and the answers are on 16 frogs. Students solve the addition problem on a lily pad and place the frog with the correct answer on it.

    Reading games

    • Reading-oriented file-folder games for the intermediate grades focus on concepts such as pronouns and plural endings. The Cookies game features a pronoun written on each of 14 cookies and 14 chocolate chips with phrases such as "Dad and I" or a name such as Mary. Children have to put the chocolate chip on the correct pronoun cookie.

The Pick a Pepper file-folder game uses peppers to teach children about plural endings. Peppers contain two words such as "you are" and contractions such as "you're." Children match phrases to corresponding contractions.

    Geography games

    • Continent can be used to teach geography to pupils in intermediate grades. The game features the seven continents and 28 countries. Children match a country to its corresponding continent.

The Skating Through the States file-folder game helps children learn state abbreviations and capitals. Skateboarders hold a sign with a state name, capital or state abbreviation. Children match the state capitals, states and abbreviations.
