Outdoor Games for Girls

A girl's birthday party, or any party or get-together, can go from humdrum to fabulous if you plan a few games. Outdoor games are ideal because they allow the girls to have lots of room to run around and play while ensuring the inside of your house stays untouched from all the energetic guests. Three enticing and challenging games are outlined below. Feel free, of course, to adapt them to your own liking, but let them serve as a starting point for a fun-filled bash.
  1. Flower Pot Toss

    • The goal of the flower pot toss is for the girls to rack up as many points as possible while throwing a small stuffed animal into a flower pot. Each girl will get three turns, each from a different distance from the flower pots. Draw a large flower on the driveway with sidewalk chalk. Place a flower pot in the center of the flower. Draw three lines, or stems, coming out from the center of the flower: one long line, one medium-length line and one short line. Each girl starts at the short line with three chances to throw the stuffed animal in the pot. Each girl then moves to the medium line and then the longest line, each time getting three chances to throw the stuffed animal into the pot. Keep a tally, with one point for getting the stuffed animal into the pot at the shortest line; two points for the medium length line and three points for the longest line. The girl with the most points at the end wins the stuffed animal. Beanie Babies or other small, cuddly toys are good for this game. Make sure to have more than one to give away in case there is a tie.

    Tag

    • This game follows the same rules as traditional tag, but you personalize it by making the players into characters from fairy tales or other popular girl TV shows, movies or books. One player is "it" and must chase the others around to tag one. The person who is tagged becomes "it" and must do the same. Anyone who has been tagged must go sit down. The last girl standing wins. Instead of the boring old "it," the one who is chasing the others could be the evil queen who is chasing the princesses; the evil sea hag chasing a bunch of little mermaids; or the evil agent chasing the girls' favorite pop stars of the moment. Have all the girls act out their characters as the game is being played.

    Hula Hoop Contest

    • Even though hula hoops hit their peak of popularity in the 1950s, they really never went out of style. The winner of this game is the one who keeps the hula hoop twirling around her hips for the longest amount of time. Purchase inexpensive hula hoops at dollar or discount stores, making sure you have one on hand for each guest. The hula hoop can be a prize each girl takes home at the end of the party. Start the game by giving each girl a hula hoop and playing a song. Once you start the music, each girl should begin twirling her hoop, with the last one standing declared the champion. You can use a timer and hold more than one session, with the winner being the one who had the longest time twirling the hoop.
