History
Game sets have dated back to as far as 3000 B.C., but there is no telling when physical games such as tag had their start. Likewise, plots of murder and mystery more than likely had their debut around that same time, but enjoyment from reading these types of stories gained its popularity in the early 1800s, around the time of Edgar Allan Poe. A few years later, the genre became more highly sought after with the arrival of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes." Today, murder mysteries take the form of police procedures, legal thrillers, spies and espionage, and psychological suspense. Bringing this theme into parties is a relatively new idea, but it is quickly growing in popularity.
Function
Murder mystery parties are an interactive party where the host and guests witness and try to solve a fictitious murder that occurs at the party. Each guest gets a detailed character description and set of objectives to complete. During the party, someone "dies" and each guest begins his own investigation. At the end of the party, guests vote on who was the murderer and prizes are awarded.
Benefits
Murder mystery-themed parties have many benefits. A primary advantage is that this type of activity can cater to any number of children. Successful parties can entertain as few as five or as many as 30. The plot of each story line can be as complicated or laid-back as you like. Because the game is interactive, children can play while everyone is mingling and playing with each other. There are no turns to take and each individual's part can be adjusted to temperament.
Considerations
Party plans are generally available in two formats, a downloadable and a boxed set. Both can be easily researched and purchased through the Internet. Costs for a small downloadable (approximately eight to 20) party can range from $30 to $50. Boxed sets will cost about 30 percent more and must be ordered ahead as they are mailed to the host. Some sites charge for parties based on a per-person rate and usually start around $8.
Warnings
When choosing a murder mystery party, be aware that some kits are meant for adults only and contain adult appropriate settings, activities or topics. Carefully check this before purchasing as most are nonrefundable. Also make note of the age of children attending the party. Murder mysteries generally use a higher level of logic and reading ability. Younger children may also become frightened with some topics. Suitability for children under the age of 10 should be carefully considered.
