Common Children's Games

With all the toys and video games that have been produced, some traditional children's games have endured. Children everywhere still play games such as hopscotch and tag.
  1. Tag

    • Tag is a game typically played in large groups in a large space. In the basic game, one person is It and chases the others. When the person who is It caches and tags another player, that player becomes It and the one who was It becomes one of the players being chased. A variation of the game includes a base where a player can go for safety from being tagged. In another variation, the original It continues to be It throughout the game, along with every other player who is tagged.

    Jump rope

    • Jump rope is a skipping game that can be played by a single child or in groups. The challenge is to see how long you can skip a rope that you rotate around yourself without tripping or stopping. In groups, two people can turn a larger rope while one or more people jump. Often, skipping is accompanied by a rhyme. Variations of the game include Double Dutch, in which the person skipping must jump over two ropes turning simultaneously.

    Jacks

    • Jacks can be played alone or in competition with other players. Jacks consists of a set of metal stars, called jacks, and a bouncing rubber ball. The player bounces the ball and scoops up as many jacks as he can before the ball comes down. When players compete, the player who scoops up the most jacks wins.

    Duck, Duck, Goose

    • This is a chase game similar to tag. Players sit in a circle acing inward. A player who is It walks around the circle, touching each player and calling her a duck. When It calls one of the seated players a goose, It runs and the player called a goose must catch It. When the goose catches It, she becomes It. The player who was It then takes the new It's place in the circle, and the game begins again.

    Hopscotch

    • Hopscotch can be played on any flat surface where a hopscotch board can be drawn. Children have played hopscotch by drawing a board in dirt or marking a paved spot with sidewalk chalk. Hopscotch also can be played indoors using masking tape. A hopscotch board has eight numbered sections. Each player takes a turn. On each turn, the player throws a rock, beanbag or other marker onto the board. The player then hops over the marker to the end of the board, turns and hops back. On the way back, he must stop and pick up the marker. If the player loses his balance while picking up the marker, he loses the round.
