Bean Bag Games for Kids

Bean bags can easily be made at home with some fabric and rice. These bags can then be used to play a few different games. What is great about bean bag games is that children of almost any age can play them. All the child has to be able to do is toss a bean bag. If you aren't into making your own bean bags, you can purchase them.
  1. Hole in One

    • Take an old medium-sized box and cut a hole big enough to fit your bean bags in the center of it. Paint a strip of yellow around the hole. Then paint a strip of orange after the yellow. Finally, paint a strip of red around the orange. This clearly demonstrates to the children where their target is. Now have the children line up in a row and hand the first child a set of bean bags. Depending on the child's age, you will need to set up a line in the grass that they cannot cross when throwing the bean bags. Let each child throw the bean bags a total of 10 times. Mark down how many times the bean bag went through the hole. The child with the most successful tosses wins.

Optional: Give each color around the hole a point value, and be sure to make the hole the largest amount of points. You can also purchase a bean bag toss game if you don't want to make one.

    Toss Across

    • Play toss across just like you would a water balloon toss game. Start out by pairing up all of the children. Give each pair of children one bean bag. Have all of the children line up and face one another. Now tell them to take two steps back. When you say, "Go," each child must toss the bean bag to their partner. Any partner that does not catch the bean bag is out. All of the children who still remain must take two more steps backward. Say, "Go," and have the children toss the bean bag back to their partner. This continues on until only one pair of children remain. They are the winners.

    Bean Bag Basketball

    • Play bean bag basketball with a few bean bags and a laundry basket. If you are playing with younger children, you will need to use a large laundry basket. If you are playing with older children, a small basket will do. Find a place for your laundry basket and then measure back eight to 10 feet for small children. Use a piece of rope to mark the spot and then measure back another five feet. Use a second piece of rope to mark the spot. The first piece of rope scores each shooter one point while the second rope scores them three. For older children you will want to place the first rope back about 20 feet with the second piece of rope at 25 feet. Each child gets a turn to shoot two or three bean bags (determined ahead of time). They may choose to take a shot from rope one or rope two. The score is written down in a notebook. Four rounds are played and then the scores are added up. The child with the most points wins.
