Fun Water Games for Kids

The long days of summer can involve a mixture of fun and boredom for your kids. As the temperature outside begins to rise, it is a good idea to start getting creative with your choice of activities to keep your kids active but prevent overheating. There are a number of fun and creative things you can do with your kids involving water that should keep them entertained and busy. With a little preparation on your end, you will have your kids begging you to go outside and play.
  1. Pool Games

    • If you have an in-ground or above-ground pool, you can set up a variety of different fun games for your kids. Let the kids play some in pool sports by setting up a volleyball net in the center of the pool. They could play volleyball or paddle ball while keeping cool in the water. You could also secure a basketball hoop to the side of the pool and let them shoot hoops. Additionally, the children could race each other searching the pool floor for objects you have tossed in such as plastic eggs or pool rings.

    Slip and Slide

    • Set up a slip-and-slide course or similar variation in your backyard. This will be a great activity if you have a lawn and a hose. The children can take turns running and sliding across the slippery plastic sheet. There are several variations of this activity. Some involve blown-up slides and kiddie pools the children can land in. Others involve variations of surfing or skim boarding. Visit a local toy store to see the great variety available.

    Hoses

    • Your children can have a lot of fun with hoses. Hold the hose yourself and the let the children limbo underneath the stream of water. If you have two hoses, you can have a competition in which the children push a beach ball into a goal using the hose water.

    Relay Races

    • Relay races involving water make for great fun. If you have a group of children, you can have them do a relay by running with a bucket of water on their heads in a race to fill up a different container across the yard. You could fill two pairs of rubber boots with water and have the children race by weaving in and out of little orange cones. There is also the classic water balloon toss where the children toss the balloon and take a step back until all but one team is eliminated for dropping the balloon.

    Water Wars

    • Have water wars where the children compete to see which team can soak the other team first. Make sure everyone starts with dry T-shirts and then unleash the kids on each other with water balloons, squirt guns, super soakers, sponges, buckets of water and hoses. Players have to sit out when they get wet and the last team with a dry player wins
