How to Create a Memory Game

Memory games are a creative way to help children master memorization concepts. Pictures can be used with preschool-age children, and problems and solutions can be used with older children. Memory games can drive home the multiplication tables by matching the answer to the right problem, or kids can look for things that go together, such as matching the policeman to the police car. You can create memory games easily with the help of your children.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect your pictures. You can print them from your computer or cut them from magazines. For a traditional memory game, you will need two of each image.

    • 2

Cut out the images, making sure they are smaller than the index cards.

    • 3

Glue the pictures onto the cards. If the index cards are lined on one side, glue the images onto the lined side. The glue will dry completely in about 5 minutes.

    • 4

Alternately, write the words or formula on the cards with markers. For example, write a capital "A" on one card and a lowercase "a" on another.

    • 5

Play the memory game by placing all the cards image-side down. Take turns flipping two cards over. If the cards match, that player gets a point. If not, flip the cards face-down again. Play then moves to the next person. The person with the most matches wins.
