How to Make School Carnival Games

School carnival games are a great fund-raising opportunity. Your school fundraiser will need eye-catching games that will entertain and draw kids back for more fun. You need to make school carnival games that will be appropriate for all ages and skill levels, from preschoolers to teens. An excellent theme for a carnival is Planet Earth. Require all game builders to use recycled materials for game parts. The budget will be low, and the message will be clear for participants.

  • Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or plywood
  • Wood strips
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paint
  • Saw

Instructions

  1. Miniature Golf

    • 1

Cut a piece of plywood or MDF to 6 to 8 feet by 2 feet. Nail or screw a 2-inch-thick by 3-inch-wide by 22-inch-long piece of wood at each end and the center on the bottom of the long piece of wood. These supports keep the board up off of the ground.

    • 2

Cut a 5-inch-wide round hole 10 inches from one end. Sand the hole to smooth all roughness from the wood.

    • 3

Paint the top of the wood green. You may need to paint a primer coat and two coats of green paint.

    • 4

Paint a school logo or recycling logo on the green. Purchase a child-size golf club and balls for a miniature golf game.

    • 5

Make a poster with the rules for the golf game, such as three tries per ticket for a player. Decide what children who sink balls will win.

    Other Carnival Games

    • 6

Make a beanbag game. Paint a school mascot picture on a piece of recycled plywood or foam board. Cut holes in five or six areas on the piece. Have children toss small beanbags at the holes. If a beanbag goes through a hole, the child wins a prize.

    • 7

Create a lid-tossing game. Place several round lids from plastic food tubs onto a work surface. Use a craft blade to cut a circle from the lids. Place refurbished old croquet posts into the ground. Encourage children to throw the lids over the posts to try to encircle the post and win.

    • 8

Make a recycled bowling game. Paint 2-quart milk bottles with a recycle, reduce and reuse theme. Use a child's playground ball as the bowling ball. Give each child three tries to knock the bottles over.

    • 9

Design a fishing game. Fill a child's wading pool with water. Write numbers on the bottom of recycled floating tub toys with a permanent marker. Young children will use a small net to "fish" a toy from the pool. The number will match the prize they will be awarded. A net can be found at a dollar store.
