How to Make Spinning Tops

Spinning tops are among the most time-tested of toys. Perhaps this owes something to the ease with which they are made. In fact, all the materials you need can probably be found lying around the house.

Things You'll Need

Pencil Markers, pencils or crayons Piece of cardboard or card stock Scissors

  Cut your cardboard into a circle about three to four inches in diameter.

  Decorate your cardboard disc using whatever medium and design you choose. One of the most popular spinning top designs consists of several colored spirals winding from the center point all the way to the edges. This emphasizes the whirling effect when your top is spun.

  After applying a ring of glue around your pencil, about one inch from the tip, poke the pencil into the middle of the disc until the pencil tip sticks out of the other side by about an inch. The ring of glue should be between the pencil tip and the disc. Make sure you poke the exact center, and that the pencil is perpendicular to the disc.

  Wait a few minutes for the glue to dry so that your pencil is firmly connected to your disc.
