Instructions
Divide the car into teams. A minimum of two players is required. Each team gets one side of the car. It is best to simply have everyone on one side of the car be on one team, and everyone on the other side of the car be on the other. The driver can play too as long as he keeps his eyes on the road. Ensure each player has enough visibility to see the sides of the road.
Set a time limit. If the trip is only an hour or so, you can make the game last the whole trip. However, if you are going to be in the car for hours, set a time limit of 30 to 90 minutes.
Start counting cows. You can only count the cows on your side of the car. However, you can try to distract the players on the other side of the car so that they do not notice cows on their side of the car. If you pass a cemetery on your side of the car, then the opposing team shouts out, "Your cows are buried!" You then start over at zero. If the other team does not notice the cemetery, then you get to keep your cows.
Make the game more interesting. If counting cows is not exciting enough on its own, add point values for other things that you might see out the window. For example, a white horse might be worth 10 points, goats and sheep might be worth 2 points each and a windmill might be worth 50.
Tally the cows. At the end of the time period, whoever has the most points wins.
