How to Make a Sidewalk Chalk Obstacle Course

We hear so much about children becoming obese, diabetic and addicted to video games. One easy way to address these critical issues is to create a sidewalk chalk obstacle course that promotes exercise and a healthy lifestyle for kids. In fact, all the climbing and hopping involved are tons of fun for the rest of the family, too. Constructing a sidewalk chalk obstacle course makes for an action filled day off from school or a jolly birthday party activity. Follow these guidelines to promote a fit lifestyle to your youngsters.

Design a lily pad lagoon. Little leapers can frog hop from one lily pad to the next. Add an extra challenging element by making each lily pad successively farther apart so jumpers have a small obstacle. If someone slips off the lily pad, he has to start over.

Color a not so scary snake pit. Snakes are easy to draw and can be decorated as wildly as you can imagine. The goal is to long jump over the snake pit. Since kids will need a running start, you can also draw a launch pad leading up to it.

Avoid scaly jaws in gator gulch when hopping from gator head to gator head. Parents will remember the old "Pitfall" game on Atari. Just like in Pitfall, you'll want to leap on the alligators' heads and not their mouths or else you might get chomped. If this sounds too easy, try jumping with just one foot.

Don't slip on a banana peel on the slippery slalom. Draw a series of bananas close together but not touching. Then on tiptoes, weave backwards through the banana chain. In fact, why not make two chains side by side? That way to friends can race to see who finishes first.
